World interactions and PC growth
I do believe that the feeling of power and pleasure a player get from a RPG should not always come from the increase of attributes or DPS, but also from its level of interactions with the world.
So the feeling of power comes not only from hitting harder or casting a stronger spell or wielding a nicer sword, but from being able to accomplish extraordinary things WHEN INTERACTING WITH THE WORLD.
Some can come from the player knowing the world, but also from gameplay features.

Examples:
1- there are a few spots in the forest where there are a lot of deers. Once I know these spots, finding preys can be easier.
2- As a low skilled tracker, mosts tracks I will find won't give nothing. As a legendary tracker, almost absolutely every tracks will give a result (and spawn an animal nearby...), whatever the difficulty might be.
3- Meeting an unknown tribe, I will be able only to try to learn the langage. Once I grow in reputation, the tribesman could offer to trade with me, teach me some stuff, and so on. And if I succeed in that heroic quest, I could even recruit tribesmen "for free", because they would be honored to follow a hero of their tribe ^^. Then of course, there are limitations to set up, but you have the idea.
